Medication persistence in people with T2D differs between drug classes

Longer medication persistence in type 2 diabetes is associated with improved glycaemic control, and investigators thus wanted to find which oral therapies are associated with the best adherence. They discovered that there is variation in this respect between different glucose-lowering agent classes. Persistence with metformin was significantly longer than that with any other medication class except for sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT 2) inhibitors. Only metformin, sulfonylureas and SGLT 2 inhibitors were associated with greater than 50% persistence at 2 years.
