Welcome to this special section on the American Diabetes Association’s 77th Scientific Sessions. This expanded meeting report covers the most important publications to emerge from the meeting, along with expert commentary from Mark Kennedy on the pooled data from CANVAS and CANVAS-Renal, the CVD-REAL results, and the implications of the findings for clinical practice.
A number of the studies reviewed here were published simultaneously at the ADA meeting and in major journals. In such cases we have taken care to review the full publications with our usual scoring system in terms of readability, applicability to practice and wow factor. For the shorter meeting abstracts, such ratings were deemed less useful and have been omitted.
In preparing this digest, special thanks are owed to the Primary Care Diabetes Society for all their work identifying the key studies. This involved cherry picking from over 380 research presentations, more than 2000 posters and numerous symposia. In a climate where clinicians have less time and funding available to attend the major diabetes meetings, the Editors hope that readers will find this comprehensive overview useful in remaining up to date with the latest developments from both sides of the Atlantic.
Vinod Patel highlights the growing evidence base that lifestyle interventions are effective, and encourages persistence even though they can be difficult.
