Albiglutide improves cardiovascular outcomes

This cardiovascular outcome study compared the once-weekly glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist albiglutide to placebo in people with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Investigators wanted to determine whether albiglutide use was safe and effective in the prevention of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction or stroke. They enrolled almost 10,000 patients living with diabetes and cardiovascular disease in a multicentred trial and followed them up for a median of 1.6 years. They discovered that albiglutide was superior to placebo in preventing major adverse cardiovascular events in this patient group.

Risks cancel benefits of aspirin in diabetes

Investigators examined whether aspirin reduced the risk of a first serious vascular event in people living with diabetes who did not have established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. The trial showed that although aspirin reduced serious vascular events in people with diabetes and no evidence of cardiovascular disease at trial entry, it also caused major bleeding events. The absolute benefits were counterbalanced by the bleeding hazard.

SGLT-2 inhibitors associated with reduced risk of hospitalisation for heart failure

A retrospective observational study of new sodium glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT-2) inhibitor users investigated whether the heart failure (HF) protective effect of these drugs differed depending on the presence or absence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and prescription period, and compared them to dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors. SGLT-2 inhibitors reduced hospitalisation for HF compared with dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors. This protective effect was apparent after 30 days in patients with established CVD, but appeared later in patients without CVD

Association between severe hypoglycaemia and CV outcomes and mortality

In an analysis conducted as part of the study DEVOTE (Trial Comparing Cardiovascular Safety of Insulin Degludec vs Insulin Glargine in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes at High Risk of Cardiovascular Events), the incidence and rates of severe hypoglycaemia and all-cause mortality were analysed. There was a significantly higher risk of all-cause mortality for people who had experienced severe hypoglycaemia during the trial. There was also a higher risk of all-cause mortality up to 1 year after experiencing severe hypoglycaemia compared with no severe hypoglycaemia in the same time interval.
