Risk of infection in people with and without diabetes

In this study, investigators evaluated infections in adults with diabetes within a large English primary care cohort, and they also compared infection rates between people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. They assessed infection rates during the period 2008–2015 and linked hospital and mortality records with 19 individual infection categories. People with diabetes, particularly type 1 diabetes, were found to be at an increased risk of serious infection, representing an important population burden.

Significant worldwide burden of cancer attributable to diabetes and high BMI

Investigators wanted to assess the extent to which diabetes and high BMI are associated with increased risk of several cancers, and if this is increasing in prevalence in most countries. They examined 12 cancers by age and sex for 175 countries in 2012. They found that that 5.6% of all incident cancers in 2012 were caused by the combined effects of diabetes and high BMI and concluded that a substantial number of cancer cases are attributable to these two risk factors.
