Lower blood pressure enhances SGLT2 renoprotection

Researchers wanted to understand the relationship between the renoprotective effects of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors and blood pressure (BP) in patients with low BP. They examined BP and urinary albumin:creatinine ratio data from patients with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease before and after treatment. Lower BP was found to be associated with greater change in urinary albumin:creatinine ratio following treatment with SGLT2 inhibitors. The researchers concluded that stricter BP management is required to enhance the renoprotective effects of SGLT2 inhibitors.

Oral semaglutide significantly reduces cardiovascular events

An outcome study for oral semaglutide has evaluated the drug’s cardiovascular safety against placebo when added to standard care. Semaglutide is an injectable incretin that has recently become available; oral semaglutide has not yet been approved by the European Medicines Agency. Results showed no significant difference in three-point major adverse cardiac events, but there was a significant reduction in cardiovascular death and all-cause mortality with oral semaglutide.

Metformin beats lifestyle changes for long-term weight loss

Investigators associated with the Diabetes Prevention Program and its follow-up study used the data gathered to identify reliable predictors of long-term weight loss that could lead to improved weight management. They discovered that in individuals with weight loss of at least 5% after 1 year, those originally assigned to metformin had the greatest weight loss in follow-up years 6 to 15. Older age and the amount of weight initially lost were the most consistent predictors of long-term weight loss maintenance.
