New and updated SIGN guidelines on diabetes care

The Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) guideline 116, originally published in 2010, has been recently updated. This guidance covers lifestyle interventions for type 1 and type 2 diabetes, as well as how to manage psychosocial issues, preventing visual impairment, and the control of cardiovascular, kidney and foot complications. There is also advice on managing type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes during pregnancy. SIGN guideline 154 is new and includes optimising glucose control in people with type 2 diabetes, as well as outlining the risks and benefits of the therapeutic classes of glucose-lowering agents and insulins for people with type 2 diabetes who require measures beyond diet and exercise to achieve glucose targets.
