Of the 206 UK hospitals surveyed, a staggering 84 provided no specialist diabetic foot-care teams, despite the understanding that these teams can greatly reduce the number of amputations and save the NHS money.
Diabetes UK Chief Executive, Barbara Young said described the survey findings “appalling” and that by not having specialist teams in place, hospitals are letting down people with diabetes.
A report by NHS Diabetes in March 2012 estimated that if a hospital spent £33 000 each year on a specialist diabetic foot service, the resultant reduction in amputations would save £250 000 a year.
Anna Morton, NHS Diabetes Director commented on the study results, stating: “It is not acceptable that thousands of people with diabetes lose a limb each year because of poor quality care.”
