Oral health and diabetes

With increasing evidence linking oral health and diabetes, it is important that individuals living with diabetes have good oral care regimens and see dental professionals regularly. This survey investigated whether people attending nurse-led diabetes clinics were aware of the links between oral health and diabetes. Overall, 55% of participants said they were unaware of the links between their oral health and diabetes control, and three quarters wanted more information on oral health. In addition, 83% of specialist diabetes team members reported a lack of confidence in discussing the links between oral health and diabetes with their patients and 75% wished to receive training in delivering oral health advice. To improve oral health behaviours, more work is needed to determine how to increase awareness of these links.
