The trend towards excess weight starts early in life, with 22% of children in Reception Year now overweight, rising to 33% in Year 6. However, these levels have remained stable in the past decade.
Only 36% of adults are participating in sport (moderate physical activity) one or more times per week, and 57% of those surveyed had not played any sport in the previous month. Similarly, most children are not getting enough exercise, with only 21% of boys and 16% of girls meeting the recommended target of 60 minutes of physical activity every day.
Fruit and vegetable consumption as also been surveyed, revealing that only 25% of men and 28% of women eat the recommended five portions per day. However, the figures in children are slightly better, with around half eating at least five a day.
