New NICE guidance published on impact of racial type in assessing diabetes risk using waist circumference and BMI

Do you regularly measure waist circumference in people with diabetes or when screening people for diabetes? Do you make adjustments of the measurement for racial type? How does BMI impact on this? New NICE public health guidance published this month sheds light on the matter.

The full title of this guidance is “Assessing body mass index and waist circumference thresholds for intervening to prevent ill health and premature death among adults from black, Asian and other minority ethnic groups in the UK”. It builds on previous published NICE guidance in this area. The aim was to determine whether lower cut-off points or thresholds should be used for these groups, compared with those used for the white population.

The evidence gathered confirmed that people from these groups are at an equivalent risk of diabetes at a lower BMI than the white European population. However, the Committee did not consider the evidence sufficient to make recommendations on the use of new BMI and waist circumference thresholds to classify whether members of these groups are overweight or obese.
