A new device is in development that tracks the temperature of the user’s insulin and sends an alert to their phone if it reaches critical levels that might affect the medication’s effectiveness.
The Insulin Angel has been designed by a group of people with type 1 diabetes and parents of children with the condition. The size of a key fob, it is placed in an individual’s medication bag and broadcasts the temperature to a paired smartphone. In addition to transmitting temperature data, it can also be used to send reminders to make sure insulin is taken at the prescribed times and to alert users if they lose or leave the house without their medication.
The Insulin Angel has been launched on the crowdfunding site Indiegogo.com, where donations and orders for the £33 gadget and app can be made. The device is expected to ship by June. If it is successfully funded, the developers plan to manufacture up to 3000 units initially, with a subsequent view to launch the device for mass use.
