A weekend designated to educate young people and their families about type 1 diabetes will be held at Leeds Metropolitan University’s Headingley Campus this August.
The University’s Getting Sorted Enterprise Unit is working in collaboration with the type 1 diabetes charity JDRF to run the event from Friday 16 to Sunday 18 August. The programme will include speeches from people living with diabetes and a number of informative group sessions on diabetes care in young people. Expert attendees will be available to answer questions on topics including nutrition, carb counting, physical activity, insulin pumps and managing diabetes in the school environment. In addition, JDRF will provide an update on its research into curing type 1 diabetes.
Getting Sorted aims to shape service improvement in the UK through participatory research with young people with the condition, their families and healthcare professionals working in the area of diabetes. Liz Webster, Director of Getting Sorted, said: “This is a brilliant opportunity for children and young people with type 1 diabetes and their families to meet with others and share their experiences. The weekend will provide families with opportunities to discuss the emotional as well as the practical issues around living with type 1 diabetes.
“There’ll be sessions with inspirational speeches from people living with type 1 and the whole weekend is designed to educate young people and their families to help them self-manage their condition.”
The discovery weekend is priced at £130 per adult (aged 12+) and £80 per child (aged 2–11), including all workshops and two nights’ accommodation with catering and evening entertainment.
