DVLA publishes updated ‘fitness to drive’ guidelines

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has replaced its “At a Glance” guidance on driving that has been in use for the last 25 years, following complaints from healthcare professionals that it was dated and hard to use.

The new chapter on diabetes lays out the criteria required for a person with diabetes to drive and includes details on blood glucose testing; hypoglycaemia unawareness; retinal, renal and limb-related complications; gestational diabetes; non-insulin hypoglycaemic agents; and pancreas/islet cell transplant recipients.

The guide has been produced as part of wider efforts by the DVLA to improve services to both healthcare professionals and drivers. It includes the development of a new service that allows drivers to report medical conditions that may affect their driving online, which is due to be trialled this summer.

The new guidance can be accessed here.
