Charity launches “mood tool” for healthcare professionals to support people with diabetes

Diabetes UK has launched a new tool that healthcare professionals can use to help initiate a conversation about emotions with a person with diabetes who may be feeling low or depressed.

Depression in people with diabetes may be twice as common as in those without the condition, but as few as one in four may have access to appropriate emotional and psychological support. Depression can impact a person’s ability to manage their diabetes, but it often goes undiagnosed in this population.

The Diabetes and Mood Information Prescription can help to guide a conversation between a healthcare professional and a person with diabetes, and enable them to have a conversation about emotional issues. This may lead to treatment of their low mood being initiated and reduce their risk of developing serious complications.

The “mood tool” provide an outline of why a person may feel low, the signs of depression or anxiety to look for, advice on how a person can start to feel better, and a section to record actions to encourage goal setting. It also provides details of how to contact Diabetes UK for further support.
