Competency Framework For Integrated Diabetic Foot Care: An update

Joanne McCardle

In the summer of 2012, TRIEPodD-UK – after many years of work and consultation – was thrilled to launch the Podiatry Competency Framework For Integrated Diabetic Foot Care – A User’s Guide, which quickly became known simply as “the framework”. Copies of the framework were distributed with The Diabetic Foot Journal, and it is now also available online (http://bit.ly/Zd3ykL) and from the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists website (www.scpod.org).

Here, you can find an update on the activities of the TRIEPodD-UK committee and the implementation of
the framework.

Save the dates:
Dimension in a day (‘DID’)
TRIEPodD-UK, FDUK and Coloplast are delighted to announce the dates for the first ‘DID’ roadshows: 19 February and 7 May.

These two days will focus on ‘Dimension 8: Wound care’. This is the biggest dimension so it will be packed with knowledge and skills for your clinical practice.

We have an esteemed line-up of speakers including Matthew Young (Consultant Physician, Edinburgh), Alistair McInnes (Senior Lecturer, Brighton), Duncan Stang (Scottish Diabetes Foot Coordinator) and Paul Chadwick (Principal Podiatrist, Salford). All healthcare professionals that are already working within diabetic foot care, and those that would like to expand their knowledge, are welcome.

The first roadshows will be hosted in Scotland, and we will venture south of the border later in 2013. This is a free event so please show your support by attending and spreading the word!

More details of the events will follow soon.

Collaboration with Diabetes UK
Professional diabetes competencies are a priority in 2013 for the Diabetes UK Professional Education Group. Joanne McCardle (Advanced Acute Diabetes Podiatrist, Edinburgh) will be working in collaboration with the Cambridge Education Group to map theoretical diabetes competencies to the TREND and TRIEPodD-UK frameworks. This will provide a learning resource for practitioners working within diabetes.

Integrating the TRIEPodD-UK framework into clinical practice
A short-life working group has been set up within the Faculty of Podiatric Medicine with an aim to integrate the TRIEPodD-UK framework into clinical practice. Joanne McCardle and Paul Chadwick will drive this group forward.

The Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists Hospital panel are aligning the ‘Diabetic Foot Module’ to the framework to ensure that the course covers all key areas at Levels C and D.

New peripheral arterial disease dimension: Dimension 14
Martin Fox (Vascular Specialist Podiatrist, Manchester) is developing a new dimension for the framework on the detection and management of peripheral vascular disease in the diabetic foot. This will be available in early 2013.

Podiatry managers shine as early adopters of the framework
David Wylie (Podiatry Manager, Glasgow) has developed a self-assessment tool that is based on the Band 6 and 7 competencies in the framework, which could also be adaptable to all levels in the framework. The results of the pilot study were disseminated at the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists conference in October (and are available on the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists website; www.scpod.org). The tool requires further work and once completed it will be available for use.

Sarann McPhee (Podiatry Manager, Scottish Highlands) has utilised the framework to develop a transitional Band 6 to Band 7 job description. The job description clarifies the skills needed to make this transition smoother, and identifies what is required within the post to provide the best patient care.

Margaret Doyle (Podiatry Manager, Ayrshire and Arran) is using the framework to create an infrastructure to support podiatry service redesign.
